The Ottawa REDBLACKS have re-signed another member of their defensive backfield, agreeing to terms with Justin Howell on a one-year contract extension.
The 30-year-old safety was limited to 13 games by injury in 2023, but still recorded a career-best 39 tackles, as well as a forced fumble. A Bradford, Ontario native, Howell has spent all five seasons of his CFL career in the nation’s capital, after an outstanding tenure with the Carleton Ravens.
“I’m feeling very grateful to be heading into my sixth season in the CFL. At this point in my career, my sole focus is on winning a Grey Cup, and I have the utmost faith and trust in Coach Dyce, the coaching staff, and the front office to lead us there,” said Howell. “They’ve done a great job adding and re-signing important pieces this off-season, and I’m excited to be a part of that. I have so much love for the guys in that locker room. Ottawa has meant so much to myself and my family over the last 10 years, I couldn’t imagine hoisting the Cup in any other jersey than red and black. Excited to get back to work!”
Drafted in the seventh round, 55th overall, by the REDBLACKS in 2018, Howell suited up in 60 CFL games, posting 126 total tackles, one sack, and five forced fumbles.

J’ai beaucoup d’amour pour les gars dans ce vestiaire. Ottawa a tellement compté pour moi et ma famille au cours des dix dernières années que je ne pourrais pas imaginer soulever la Coupe avec un autre maillot que le rouge et noir. Je suis impatient de me remettre au travail !
