While football players may never get the respect they deserve for playing special teams well, the unit can change the course of a game in an instant.
Jean-Philippe Bolduc knows that well. So does his long-time special teams coordinator, Bob Dyce.
A team needs good special teams to win a championship and Bolduc’s arrival strengthened that unit,” said the veteran coach.
“It’s not a coincidence that JP’s arrival in 2016 was the same time our special teams play improved,” said Dyce, the leader of arguably the league’s best special teams group. “His competitiveness and hard work is unmatched both on the field, in meetings and in the community.”
Bolduc, a linebacker and special teams powerhouse, joined the REDBLACKS in 2016, in time for a historic run to a Grey Cup Championship. He announced his retirement from professional football this week.
“Time to hang up the cleats after 21 years,” the 29-year-old Montreal native tweeted in both French and English. “It’s been a good run! Thanks to everyone who helped along the way.”
Dyce called Bolduc a “tough, consummate leader” who forced his teammates to raise their games and points out that others will have to step up and step in to replace the “integral part” of the unit.
“It was a privilege to coach him and I wish him nothing but success in his new career and future,” Dyce said.
Veteran linebacker Antoine Pruneau says he’ll miss his “brother” but is excited to see where his adventure takes him.
“You represent everything a football player should strive to be,” said Pruneau, the official leader of the REDBLACKS’ aptly-named French Mafia, of which Bolduc is also a key member. “I’ll remember every moment we had as teammates, especially those off the field! The French Mafia is losing a big piece.”
General Manager Marcel Desjardins said he’d “love to have a team full of JPs.”
“JP epitomizes what it means to be a professional on the field and a great person and leader off the field,” said Desjardins. “Bonne chance JP et, surtout, un gros merci.”

In 81 games, all with the REDBLACKS, Bolduc had 53 special teams tackles, 15 defensive tackles, an interception and a forced fumble. And while he was a key piece of the REDBLACKS on-field product, Bolduc became known for his impact on the Ottawa-Gatineau community, including regular event appearances and acting as the REDBLACKS ambassador for the Telus to #EndBullying campaign.

“Ce n’est pas une coïncidence si l’arrivée de JP en 2016 a correspondu à l’amélioration du jeu de nos unités spéciales”, a déclaré Dyce, le leader de ce qui est sans doute le meilleur groupe d’unités spéciales de la ligue. “Sa compétitivité et son travail acharné sont inégalés à la fois sur le terrain, en réunion et dans la communauté.”
Bolduc, un secondeur et une puissance sur les unités spéciales, a rejoint le ROUGE et NOIR en 2016, à temps pour une course historique vers un championnat de la Coupe Grey. Il a annoncé sa retraite du football professionnel cette semaine.
“Il est temps de raccrocher les crampons après 21 ans”, a tweeté le natif de Montréal de 29 ans en français et en anglais. “On accroche les crampons après 21 ans,” a déclaré Bolduc. “Merci à tous ceux qui m’ont aidé.”
Dyce a qualifié Bolduc de “leader dur et complet” qui a forcé ses coéquipiers à élever leur niveau de jeu et souligne que d’autres devront s’imposer et prendre la relève pour remplacer la “partie intégrante” de l’unité.
“Ce fut un privilège de le coacher et je ne lui souhaite que du succès dans sa nouvelle carrière et son avenir”, a déclaré Dyce.
Le secondeur vétéran Antoine Pruneau dit que son “frère” lui manquera, mais qu’il est impatient de voir où son aventure le mènera.
“Tu représentes tout ce qu’un joueur de football devrait s’efforcer d’être”, a déclaré Pruneau, le chef officiel de la bien nommée Mafia française du ROUGE et NOIR, dont Bolduc est également un membre clé. “Je me souviendrai de tous les moments que nous avons passés en tant que coéquipiers, surtout ceux en dehors du terrain ! La mafia française perd un gros morceau”.
Le directeur général Marcel Desjardins a déclaré qu’il “aimerait bien avoir une équipe remplie de JP”.
“JP incarne ce que signifie être un professionnel sur le terrain et une grande personne et un leader en dehors du terrain”, a déclaré Desjardins. “Bonne chance JP et, surtout, un gros merci.”

Tout en étant un élément clé sur le terrain du ROUGE et NOIR, Bolduc s’est fait connaître pour son impact sur la communauté d’Ottawa-Gatineau, notamment en participant régulièrement à des événements et en agissant comme ambassadeur du ROUGE et NOIR pour la campagne Telus #ZéroIntimidation
