Barron Miles – Defensive Coordinator

Barron Miles joins the Ottawa REDBLACKS in 2023 as the club’s Defensive Coordinator, marking the continuation of a coaching career that began in 2010 with the BC Lions.

Miles returns to the CFL after spending 2022 as Defensive Coordinator with the Bishop’s University Gaiters. Prior to his move to the university coaching ranks, Miles coached with the Montreal Alouettes after joining the club in 2020 as Defensive Backs Coach and Pass Game Coordinator. He would serve as Montreal’s Defensive Coordinator from 2021-2022.

The Roselle, NJ native entered the CFL coaching ranks in 2010 as a Defensive Assistant with the BC Lions for two seasons. In 2015, he served as the Winnipeg Blue Bombers’ Defensive Backs Coach, after spending the previous three seasons in the same position with the Saskatchewan Roughriders. As a coach, he won two Grey Cups with BC in 2011 and with Saskatchewan in 2013.

He was the Edmonton Eskimos’ Defensive Backs and Player Development coach since 2016. With his help, the Eskimos finished third in the CFL in 2019 allowing 22.2 points average per game and second in the league with 31 offensive touchdowns allowed.

Prior to his coaching career, Miles spent 12 years in the CFL as a defensive back, including seven seasons with the Alouettes. In 187 games in the CFL, he made 66 interceptions, 508 defensive tackles, while adding 40 on special teams. He was chosen a CFL All-Star six times during his career. He hoisted the Grey Cup twice as a player in 2002 with Montreal and in 2006 with BC.

On August 7, 2009, Miles became the CFL’s career leader for blocked kicks (13) with a blocked against the Saskatchewan Roughriders. He was inducted into the Canadian Football Hall of Fame in 2018.

In 1995 he was drafted in the sixth round by the Pittsburgh Steelers. The former Nebraska University Cornhusker helped his team win the 1994 NCAA college football national championship.

Barron and his wife, Jennifer, have three children; Raven, Ava and Barron Junior.
