REDBLACKS drop third straight game in loss to Winnipeg

Most of Friday night’s scoring came from the host Winnipeg Blue Bombers. Quarterback Matt Nichols set a Winnipeg franchise record with 19 consecutive completions, leading his team to an impressive 31-1 win over the visiting Ottawa REDBLACKS.

After a tough first half, REDBLACKS  limited Winnipeg to just three points in the second half of the game. Ultimately, their record falls below .500 for the first time in the 2019 season, with a record of 2-3.

Ottawa’s defence started on a streak of three consecutive stops in the first quarter, keeping the Bombers off the board for the better part of the first. But then, after that third stop, quarterback Jonathan Jennings had a pass picked off by former REDBLACK Winston Rose. He then took it to the house and gave the Bombers their first lead of the game at 6:28.

An Ottawa rouge – which would eventually stand as the lone REDBLACKS point of the game – was the only other point of the first quarter.

Winnipeg then went on a 21-0 run in the second quarter, beginning with Nichols passing for touchdowns on back-to-back possessions. They came at 14:34 and 11:57 respectively, and gave Winnipeg a 21-1 advantage.

The offence continued rolling for the Bombers until the end of the game, where they put up 10 more points before the end of the game en route to an impressive victory.

GAME NOTES
