Rough Rider great Jerry “Soupy” Campbell passes away

The Ottawa REDBLACKS and the CFL Ottawa Alumni Association are mourning the loss of Ottawa Rough Rider great Jerry “Soupy” Campbell, he was 73.

After joining the Rough Riders from Calgary during the 1968 season, Soupy went on to win his first of three Grey Cup with Ottawa that season. He would win his second the following year before enshrining his name on the Grey Cup for a third time in 1973 – playing a significant part in all three championships. A savvy and quick linebacker, Campbell was a CFL All-Star for an impressive seven straight years (1969 to 1975) all with Ottawa.

The Binghamton, NY native was one of the Rough Riders team captains and was the heart and soul of the defensive unit known as “Capital Punishment”.

Campbell was inducted into the Ottawa Sport Hall of Fame in 1995 and the Canadian Football Hall of Fame in 1996.
