CFL mourns the loss of a legend

The Canadian Football League family is mourning the loss of one of its greats. The news of the passing of Don Matthews touched thousands across the football community whom he impacted throughout his illustrious career.

Matthews won five Grey Cups as a head coach that ties him for the most ever with three other legends – Wally Buono, legendary Ottawa Rough Riders head coach Frank Clair and Hugh Campbell, father of REDBLACKS head coach Rick Campbell.

“Don was a tremendous leader who did it his way and always made decisions that were in the best interest of his players. He knew what it took to win and I feel privileged to have had the chance to work with him with the Alouettes from 2002 through 2006. Don’s passing means he’s been inducted into the ultimate Hall of Fame.”
Marcel Desjardins – REDBLACKS General Manager

“Coach Matthews was a true pioneer in the CFL. I will always be grateful he that gave me my first coaching opportunity in the CFL. He taught me to think outside of the box and always pushed me to find better ways coach and to reach the players.”
Rick Campbell – REDBLACKS Head Coach

Matthews holds the record for having coached with six CFL teams as head coach, including BC, Baltimore, Montreal, Toronto, Saskatchewan and Edmonton.

He was inducted into the CFL Hall of Fame in 2011.

The Ottawa REDBLACKS and RNation offer their condolences to the Matthews family.
