Five ‘Can’t Miss’ Games This Season

The Ottawa REDBLACKS kick off their quest to defend last year’s Grey Cup Championship on June 23. It will be non-stop CFL action from opening kick through the fall, but here are five home games at TD Place you should be particularly excited about heading into the 2017 CFL campaign.

Here are this season’s “Can’t Miss” home games:

Calgary @ Ottawa – June 23
RNation won’t have to wait long for a rematch of last year’s Grey Cup game as the Calgary Stampeders will come to TD Place for Ottawa’s home opener. The clubs met twice in the regular season last year, playing to rare tie in Ottawa on July 8 before the Stamps got the better of the REDBLACKS in Calgary on September 17. As for the Grey Cup game, it was one for the ages as Ottawa stunned the favourite Stampeders in an overtime thriller to claim the championship.

Toronto @ Ottawa – July 8
The REDBLACKS were busy when CFL Free Agency opened during the off-season and no other team felt that as much as the Toronto Argonauts. Looking to bolster its receiving corps, Ottawa went out and signed a pair of former Argos in Kenny Shaw and Diontae Spencer, both of whom will get their first crack at their former club when the Argos come to town in Week 3. Tori Gurley and AJ Jefferson, who also spent much of last year with Toronto, are also now here in Ottawa.

Edmonton @ Ottawa – August 10
This matchup has been developing into a solid rivalry ever since the Eskimos and REDBLACKS met in the 2015 Grey Cup game, with Edmonton edging the second-year REDBLACKS in that one. The following season, former REDBLACKS Offensive Coordinator Jason Maas took over head coaching duties in Edmonton and, most recently, former REDBLACKS Assistant General Manager Brock Sunderland joined Edmonton as their new GM. Needless to say, there are plenty of storylines at play in what should be a great game.

Saskatchewan @ Ottawa – September 29
The annual Lumberjack Game lands on Ottawa’s late-September date with the Roughriders. Ottawa will be looking to improve their fortunes against Saskatchewan after dropping a pair of tight games against the Riders by a combined three points. If the trend of the past few years holds true – the Riders won both games over Ottawa in 2014, the REDBLACKS won both in 2015 – the REDBLACKS should be due for a strong pair of regular season games against Saskatchewan in 2017.

Hamilton @ Ottawa – October 27
Less than a month before Ottawa hosts the 105th Grey Cup, the regular season will wrap up at TD Place as the REDBLACKS host the Tiger-Cats. The Friday evening tilt is also Fan Appreciation Night and, as is often the case in the CFL, the final game of the regular season schedule could have major implications on playoff positioning.
