REDBLACKS quartet nominated for CFL Awards

A return trip to the East Division Final has earned REDBLACKS head coach Rick Campbell, receiver Ernest Jackson and offensive linemen Jon Gott and Jason Lauzon-Seguin recognition as CFL Awards nominees.

Campbell, who was named the league’s top coach in 2015, is once again up for the award alongside Calgary Stampeders coach Dave Dickenson. After a 2-16 season in 2014, Campbell has led the REDBLACKS to the East Final in back-to-back seasons.

Receiver Ernest Jackson, who surpassed the 1,000-yards receiving milestone for the second year in a row with 1,225 yards and 10 touchdowns, is nominated for the CFL’s Most Outstanding Player. One of the most impressive stats of Jackson’s career-best season is that the veteran receiver was not tagged with a single dropped pass all year. He’ll be up against Calgary quarterback Bo Levi Mitchell for the honour.

Offensive lineman Jon Gott, who has lined up at centre for every REDBLACKS regular season and playoff game since the club kicked off a new era of CFL football in Ottawa in 2014, is up for Most Outstanding Offensive Lineman. Also nominated in that category is Calgary’s Derek Dennis.

Proving himself a solid first-year player capable of playing different positions up and down the offensive line, Jason Lauzon-Seguin, whom the REDBLACKS drafted with their first-round pick this year, is nominated for Most Outstanding Rookie. Once again, his competition will come by way of a Calgary Stampeder, with receiver DaVaris Daniels getting the nod out of the West.

The winners will be announced in Toronto during Grey Cup Week festivities on November 24 at the CFL Awards.

The REDBLACKS will focus on perfecting their play this week while they await their East Final opponent from Sunday’s semifinal tilt between Hamilton and Edmonton. The November 20th East Final from TD Place will either be a rematch of last year’s East Final or a rematch of the 2015 Grey Cup. A limited number of great seats are still available as the REDBLACKS eye their 12th consecutive sellout.
