Game Summary

The Ottawa REDBLACKS and the Calgary Stampeders played to a rare tie on Friday Night Football in front of a raucous, sold-out crowd at TD Place. Both team’s went punch for punch until the final whistle, putting up 26 points apiece while leaving the game with one point each.

“I think it was a case of missed opportunities,” REDBLACKS head coach Rick Campbell said after the game. “They are a good football team, so I give them a lot of credit, but we definitely had a few instances there at the end where we could have closed it out. We didn’t do it.

“We don’t have a lot of time to dwell on this one. We are back at it on Wednesday, so we just keep moving forward. This tie might really help us out in the big picture down the road; it could end up being the difference in the standings.”

The home team’s early season star performers put in another another electric performance as quarterback Trevor Harris linked up with wide-receiver Chris Williams for three touchdown passes and a total of 130 receiving yards. Over the course of the game, Trevor Harris threw for 396 yards, completing 39 of 50 attempted passes in just his second career start for the REDBLACKS.

Williams’ performance in Ottawa’s home-opener proved record-breaking as he now has 493 receiving yards and six touchdowns the most yards to start a season surpassing former Blue Bombers receiver Alfred Jackson’s 483 yard total set in 1994.

When asked about his stellar start to the year, Chris Williams was humble. “It’s all about my teammates. We just all love each other. We all run out for each other and it is showing this year.”

Newly acquired Ottawa running back Nic Grigsby also put in a strong performance in his first game with the ROUGE et NOIR, rushing for a total of 65 yards on 14 attempts.

It will be another short week for the REDBLACKS, their second in the opening four weeks of the season. Ottawa will travel to Toronto on Tuesday for a Wednesday night tilt against the 2-1 Toronto Argonauts at BMO Field.

First Half Summary

The REDBLACKS and Stampeders duked it out in the first half as both teams looked to get their offensive game going early. Ottawa struck first with quarterback Trevor Harris linking up with wide-receiver Chris Williams on the team’s first series for a 6-yard touchdown early in the first quarter. Calgary responded just four minutes later as quarterback Bo Levi Mitchell picked out Marquay McDaniel for a 35-yard touchdown pass.

In the second quarter, Harris again linked up with Williams, this time finding the speedster with a quick-fire pass that saw Williams turn and burn the last Calgary defender with pace before sprinting the football into the end zone for a 52-yard score. Calgary looked determined to grab a touchdown late in the second half, but their resolute drive was broken in the red zone as REDBLACKS linebacker Damaso Munoz prevented the touchdown pass with a strong tackle. The stop forced Calgary to settle for the 10-yard field goal seeing Ottawa lead 13-10 at the half.

Second Half Summary

While the second half as seen offensive explosions this season, Friday night proved a quieter affair as both teams defence came up big. Calgary were first to strike with a 26-yard field goal towards the end of the third quarter. In the fourth quarter, Trevor Harris and Chris Williams reignited their chemistry as the quarterback found the wide receiver in the end zone for a 5-yard touchdown pass. Calgary were steely in their resolve and quickly answered via a strong offensive drive that was capped off with a Bo Levi Mitchell pass to Jerome Messam for the game tying score.

Neither team could capitalize on good opportunities in overtime with both team’s kickers hitting two field goals apiece ending in the first draw in REDBLACKS history.
