Free agent frenzy sees REDBLACKS add Spencer, Berger and Omara

The Ottawa REDBLACKS were busy on the first day of CFL Free Agency as the market for unsigned players opened at noon on Tuesday.

After signing former Blue Bombers linebacker Khalil Bass and former Argonauts receiver Kenny Shaw with their first two moves of the day, the REDBLACKS made splashes on both sides of the ball. Offensively, the club agreed to terms with another former Toronto Argonaut receivers in Diontae Spencer. Defensively, the club signed defensive backs Adam Berger (from Calgary) and linebacker Ron Omara (Hamilton).

Spencer, who signed a one-year contract, put up significant yardage despite being limited to 12 games last year. He set a new career high with 706 yards receiving for three touchdowns on 71 receptions. The 24-year-old from Los Angeles also returned 33 punts for 341 yards.

Berger comes to Ottawa on a one-year deal after being in Calgary since 2013. The 26-year-old Vancouver native had four tackles and four sacks in 2016 and has 19 sacks overall in his last three seasons.

It will be a homecoming for Ron Omara as the Aylmer native signed a two-year deal to come to Ottawa. The national linebacker spent the last two seasons in Hamilton where had eight sacks.
