Game Summary
Bo Levi Mitchell and the red hot Calgary Stampeders were too much for the Ottawa REDBLACKS, as the league’s top team scored early and often at home, winning 48-23.

REDBLACKS Head Coach Rick Campbell said: “We challenged ourselves at halftime and said we have got to coach better and call the game as well as we can and we also have to play better and compete. A lot of what football is about is one on one match-ups and our guys showed that we have it in us.”

Campbell added: “We are going to keep working at this. There is a lot of hope. We have potential. The East is going to be a big jumble of teams and there is going to be a lot to play for coming up.”

Trevor Harris put in a strong performance despite the loss, throwing for 289 yards and two touchdown passes, while receiver Ernest Jackson pushed his consecutive game touchdown streak to six games. Running back Travon Van put in a rugged rushing game, posting 56 yards over 16 carries.

However, Ottawa’s star performers were overshadowed by the men in red, as the leagues’s second best passer in yards, Bo Levi Mitchell, threw for 353 yards – 250 in the first half – and two touchdowns, while receiver Marquay McDaniel made five receptions for 102 yards and one touchdown. Linebacker Alex Singleton was dominant on defense, making 11 tackles.

First Half Summary
The first half was a high-scoring affair. After conceding an early single to the REDBLACKS, Calgary stormed down the field with a six-play, 75-yard drive culminating in a one-yard TD rush by Andrew Buckley. The home team failed in their two-point convert attempt. Ottawa answered with a 48-yard field goal courtesy of kicker Chris Milo, clawing the visitors back to within two points of Calgary.

Unfazed, Mitchell led his team back down the field with a seven-play drive that was finished off with a fine TD reception by McDaniel, who made a great stretch effort to get the ball into the visitor’s end zone. Calgary again failed in their two-point convert attempt. Again, Ottawa was unable to find the home team’s end zone, settling for a second consecutive field goal from Chris Milo as the first quarter came to an end.

Calgary opened the second quarter with their third straight TD drive as Messam finished off a 5 play, 78 yard series by running the ball in from four yards out. Mitchell found McDaniel for a two point convert, extending their lead over the REDBLACKS to 20-7.

Harris turned to Travon Van on the next series to make the timely plays. The running back made three rushes for 23 yards, allowing Harris good field position to complete three passes, including a 36-yard TD pass to Ernest Jackson. That score marked Jackson’s sixth consecutive game scoring a touchdown and his seventh total on the season.

Unable to find their fourth TD of the game, Calgary turned to kicker Rene Paredes for a 40 yard field goal, extending their lead to nine points.

After a major penalty gifted Ottawa a fresh set of downs, Trevor Harris saw his ensuing pass picked off by Jamar Wall, who ran the ball back down the field for a 60-yard TD, sending the rampant scoring Stampeders into halftime with a 30-14 lead.

Second Half Summary
In the third quarter, Ottawa’s defensive line shutdown Mitchell and the red hot Calgary offence, preventing the home team from ever really threatening their end zone.

Ottawa’s O-line fed off their defensive units energy and, late in the third quarter, clawed to within 10 points of their opponents as Harris linked up with Greg Ellingson in the end zone. Desperate for points, the REDBLACKS went for a two-point conversion but Harris was unable to hit Ernest Jackson with a quick fire pass.

Ottawa conceded an early single in the fourth quarter, but answered just over a minute later with a Chris Milo Field goal, 31-23. Eight points would be as close as Ottawa would come to Calgary’s lead, as Mitchell marched his team back up the field and linked up with receiver McDaniel for a late fourth quarter TD.

The Stampeders would add another late defensive touchdown and a field goal.

Final score: 48-23.
