Ottawa Awarded 2017 Grey Cup

The Ottawa Sports and Entertainment Group (OSEG), owners of the Ottawa REDBLACKS of the Canadian Football League (CFL), today expressed excitement and delight with the CFL’s decision to award the 2017 Grey Cup and Grey Cup Festival to the City of Ottawa.  The game and series of Festival events and activities that lead up to it will mark the apex of the year-long Canada 150 celebrations in Canada’s Capital.

“On behalf of my partners – John Ruddy, Bill Shenkman, John Pugh and Jeff Hunt – I’d like to thank Commissioner Jeffery Orridge and the CFL Board of Governors for honouring our organization, city and fans with this iconic national event,” said OSEG Executive Chair, Roger Greenberg.  “I’m proud of the hard work and commitment to customer service exhibited by our staff at TD Place and the performance of the REDBLACKS players and coaches.  They’ve captured the hearts of fans of all ages and created a game-day experience that’s second to none.  We’re ready for the challenge and excited by the opportunity to host Canada’s celebration.”

CFL Commissioner, Jeffrey Orridge announced the awarding of the 105th Grey Cup to Ottawa during a pre-game ceremony at the sold-out Ottawa REDBLACKS/Toronto Argonauts game earlier this evening, sparking a thunderous reaction from fans (RNation). The ceremony was carried live across Canada by TSN and included the participation of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau in a video feature that preceded the announcement. In the video, Prime Minister Trudeau shined the Grey Cup with his sleeve and instructed an RCMP constable to “Take good care of it. It’s Canada’s Cup.”

Ontario Attorney General Yasir Naqvi took part in the ceremony from field level. “As the Member of Provincial Parliament for Ottawa Centre – the home of Ottawa REDBLACKS – I could not be more proud of our city and our community! In true Ottawa fashion, we are all rallying behind our team, our celebrations and our year to shine. This game will showcase all Ottawa has to offer to Canadian football lovers from across the country. We are cheering for the Grey Cup to stay in Ottawa this year – Go REDBLACKS!”
