Game Summary
For the second straight season the Ottawa REDBLACKS open their season 2-0 after they triumphed over Montreal Alouettes 28-13. Trevor Harris, who made his first career start for the REDBLACKS, continued where he left off in Edmonton last week throwing for 395 yards and three touchdowns. REDBLACKS speedster Chris Williams also put in another standout performance, making seven receptions for a total of 187 yards and one touchdown.
“It’s big! We have four out of five games on the road, which makes it tough but we just talked about focusing one game at a time and we can’t wait to get back home in front of our fans at TD Place,” said REDBLACKS head coach Rick Campbell following the win. “Our guys love the city, love playing for the whole city of Ottawa and Gatineau and we can’t wait to get home.”
TD Place will be at capacity next Friday night when the REDBLACKS host the Calgary Stampeders. The football club announced earlier in the evening that the Home Opener was sold out.
The one blot on an overall positive Thursday night in Montreal was an unfortunate injury to REDBLACKS linebacker Olivier Goulet-Veilleux, who went down with a severe leg injury after a Montreal player rolled off a tackle and onto his leg.
“Our prayers go out to him and we are just praying…that it will be healed and healed quickly. It’s a difficult injury, that’s just football but I know that he would want us to go out and play hard for him and get this win for him,” said Harris.“
Ottawa’s offence and defence came up big Thursday night in Montreal. On offence they mustered 532 yards of total offence while the defence held the Als to just 13 points – a single touchdown and only 62 rushing yards.
While the July 8 home opener might be sold out, a few thousand tickets remain for our game against Toronto on July 31, a night that will see the 1976 Ottawa Rough Riders honoured to celebrate the 40th anniversary of their Grey Cup victory.
First Half Summary
Ottawa put in a strong first half offensive performance with quarterback Trevor Harris picking out receivers Ernest Jackson and Greg Ellingson for two second quarter touchdowns.
Harris, filling in for the injured Henry Burris, threw for 190 yards and completed 11 of 14 pass attempts in the first 30 minutes of play. Running-back Travon Van made some timely plays, rushing for 86 yards on 12 attempts.
The REDBLACKS look set to head into half-time with a 12 point lead, but a late 53 yard field-goal by Alouettes kicker Boris Bede clawed the home team within 9 points of Ottawa.
Second Half Summary
The game reached a boiling point midway through the third quarter when Montreal wide-receiver Duron Carter made a great touchdown reception before his exuberant celebration led him to a sideline collision with REDBLACKS head coach Rick Campbell.
The collision caused a scuffle between both benches and resulted in each team seeing a player ejected. Trevor Harris continued his dominance in the second half, throwing for another 205 yards and hitting Chris Williams for a long 52–yard touchdown pass late in the fourth quarter to seal the REDBLACKS second win of the season.
